Don't Say Goodbye
by Laurine Mawson
You've gone to a land where bones grow on trees
Gates always open, and there just ain't no fleas
The shepherd is loving, there's plenty of walks
Lots of back scratching and long wordless talks
While you're sniffing around where the trail never ends
You just might meet up with some of our friends
Little black Maggie -- she's a lady of grace
She'd shake hands with the Queen, look her right in the face
She couldn't stop wagging, and she could say "hello"
She left us at Christmas, it was her time to go
Another black dog, who just wasn't the same
Answered to "Whoopsie" -- never had a real name
Only one eye, but never one-eyed
Loved to play games -- she'd seek, and we'd hide
Never was there a more faithful pup
A shoe on the face meant "It's time to get up"
Don't overlook Tillie, though she is so small
Unwanted, unloved 'til she adopted us all
She finally found her place in the sun
Our lives were enriched by this brave little one
It might be the wind that shuts the screen door
But why do I hear a soft tap on the floor
So don't say goodbye, though you must shed a tear
We loved and were loved by our friends, always near
